Staining
Staining decks, fences, and trim will enhance their appearance, protect the wood from weather damage, and extend their lifespan. Especially with the wet climate here in the Pacific Northwest, it's important to prevent water from soaking into the wood, which can cause warping, rotting, and mold.

Types of Stains
Semi-Transparent
Semi-Solid
Semi-Transparent
Most people like a semi-transparent stain since it highlights the wood’s natural look. Stains penetrate deep into the wood unlike paint which is a surface bond. In Portland’s wet and humid climate, stains allow the wood to breathe better and unlike paint, your deck stain won’t be as prone to cracking and peeling.
When a deck starts to age and show imperfections it might be a better idea to go with a semi-solid or for the best durability, a solid stain. Once you committ to a solid stain, there is no going back to semi-transparent but typically a solid stain will last you five years compared with semi-transparent which will last 2-3 years.
